Following on from last week’s comments on the ‘Stones’ and especially Mick Jagger’s magic I wanted to make note of some of their lyrics that may be insightful for you and your practice.
We seem to be in a world where people are conditioned to going after what they want. This is seen to its extreme at Christmas. I heard this week that the average Australian family will spend $4,000 this Christmas – 30 billion nationally. The recipients of this giving, (you and me) will be hopefully getting what we want but is that really what we need?
In the words of the ‘Stones’: “You don’t always get what you want… but you always get what you need”.
Now, let’s shift this thought across to your practice. Have you noticed that people come to you based on what they feel they “want”? The part that’s bugging them, the things they cant do, the blocks and stops in their life. There’s a tendency for us to buy into this “want” and overlook the “needs” that the person has. We drive to fulfil their “wants” that are screaming loudly for attention.
Like the Australians this Christmas, chiropractors put lots of resources into the person’s perceived “problems” and current “wants” neglecting to address their real “needs”. Chiropractic has a massive service to offer humanity and only a tiny part of it is in giving people what they want. Sure, what they want may be what brings them into your office but it is not what keeps them there adopting the chiropractic lifestyle.
Make a commitment to yourself to bridge the gap between what they “want” and what they “need”. Don’t pull back on providing people with the opportunity to get the life enhancing benefits of a lifetime of quality chiropractic, not just a short term solution to their current “want”. People need what you have in your hands and the only ones who can get it to them is you.
Commit to serving your practice members at the highest level and know that they may not always get what they want…. But they always get what they need when you are playing full on.
