This article is one of mankind’s mistakes proposed by Marcus Tullius Cicero (106 BC-43BC) entitled “The Six Mistakes of Man”.
I believe that these ‘mistakes’ are as common today as they were over 2100 years ago and I am sure that you will notice parts of you that participate in these mistakes.
Mankind’s Mistake #1 is ‘‘The illusion that personal gain is made up of crushing others’.
Now, more than ever in the history of mankind is this approach erroneous. Destroying, belittling or crushing others in order to support and build oneself or ones own interests is a false premise and is certainly a mistake.
Competition builds strength and improvement and it is something to be encouraged in all circumstances. It’s twin, cooperation, however must also be there in equal amounts. Cooperation brings with it support and nurturing. These are necessary factors for a person or business to grow.
From time to time the chiropractic profession gets out of kilter and diminishes itself as a whole by losing sight of this important point.
So often we see communities of chiropractors working in isolation from each other – being fiercely competitive and doing whatever they can to bring the others in their area down. They spread venomous judgement of others through word of mouth or social media and use the regulatory bodies to vilify their colleagues with vexatious complaints.
This leads to diminished benefit for everyone.
Take a moment to consider where you are playing into this mistake of tearing others down in order to build yourself up. Maybe its time to reconnect with those who you have ostracised, to communicate with those who have differing viewpoints and find the common ground.
Personal gain can be obtained by others gaining.
