How to Choose a Coach

As you consider a coach, ask yourself:

• Am I clear on my reasons for taking on a coach?
• Am I ready for coaching?
• Am I prepared to do my part?

In choosing a coach:

• Interview several coaches from different organisations. Most will offer a complimentary consultation.
• How well did they establish rapport, listen to you, assist you in a new perspective, intensify your hunger for more?
• Which one is aligned to your values and vision – that is, “gets you?”
• Who challenges and stretches you?
• Determine if they have experience in the field, and in life
• Choose well qualified coaches – are they leaders in their field?
• Who do you feel both supported and challenged by? (remember a coach inspires us to do that which we have been resisting in order to become who it is that we want to become)
• Choose a coach who will hold you accountable
• Do they walk their talk?
• Are their agreements, policies and costs clear?
• Do they have a well organised structure?
• Are their reassessments and evaluations of progress?
• Is their individual flexibility, or is it a “canned, one size fits all” approach
• Are you honoured as an individual
• Do you want a step by step procedure, or to forge your own path? Determine how your coach will assist you in achieving these
• Do they have wisdom, experience and caring?
• Would I love to develop a coaching relationship with this person or organisation?
