- Care more than others think is wise.
- Risk more than others think is safe.
- Dream more than others think is practical.
- Expect more than others think is possible.” – Jim Gentil
Here’s the fourth comment on Jim Gentil’s quote on Excellence. I suggest that if you take the time over the next week to focus on each of these statements you will see major changes occur for yourself and your practice.
Expecting more than others think is possible can be an activity fraught with risk and yet this is the stuff of greatness. Very few inventions, developments or innovations of mankind would have been brought to reality if someone hadn’t expected more than others thought was possible.
No matter how low things are, no matter how slow your practice is, no matter how resistant some practice members may be, no matter how hopeless a person’s health may be there is room for expectations that exceed what others consider to be possible.
The most damaging thing you can do to a person is to take away hope, to take away the possibilities of success or recovery. As a chiropractor you have a duty to instill the expectation within people that their body is a magnificent creation that has the powers to self heal no matter how bad the circumstance or damage may be.
Chiropractic has been built on and continues to be built on the failures of other health professions. The results you can get just using your own two hands, a heart full of love and a mind full of knowledge of the power of life accompanied with high expectations of your abilities are simply miraculous.
Unfortunately many chiropractors have low expectations of the power of their toolkit. This low expectancy reduces the possibilities of many situations resolving or improving. With low expectation for magnificent outcomes they refrain from scheduling people with enough intensity or frequency to have an opportunity to see the results that are possible. They refrain from learning and applying techniques that have deep and powerful effects on people’s bodies. This becomes a self fulfilling prophecy and the chiropractor is convinced that what they were told in chiropractic college was correct – that chiropractic is only good as a short term adjustment for the relief of acute musculoskeletal aches and pains.
This week reconsider your expectations in every area of your care with every person you see. You may just transform a person’s life.
